Well, well, well, Your chaps mention of BOFs (Boring Old F...). Well My
old Dad and Mum now face the end of their days with hideous reality. With
the onset of minor strokes they face being robbed of there minds piece by
piece until some critical function fails and the great final curtain
descends.

With care and attention my Dad let me use the family radio to receive the
medium and long waves in the 1950's. Later this included a radio with
short waves included. Thus the great adventure began. Listening to voices
from "overseas" from the vast (well in those days it felt vast) world. The
spark of a Radio Amateur was kindled and I began the exploration of a new
hobby.

With a neighbour who is (now very old) amateur I received my first proper
short-wave receiver with a BFO. I began a journey from the ends of the
Earth to the final frontier. I also made a spark transmitter to use on the
shortwaves. Also for those younger, I began on CB in the 1967 with a pair
of hand helds on 29.067 MHz single channel. I also aspired to a wireless
set number 19 and was on 2 MHz with the rest of those pioneers of CB.

Having passed the Radio Amateurs Examination (no dilutees then), you had
to be advanced class or fail. I gained my licence to transmit on VHF. This
was later followed with a Morse code test of 12 word per minute.

last year one old lady was amazed at my respect for her elderly movement
when in my way. I told her the respect was born of the certain knowledge
that unless something else happened one day I too would be old and suffer
like her. She retorted that she hoped old age would treat me more kindly
than it had done with her and went on to list the health problem with old
age.

As us that are left grow old and the years condemn remember them (11th
hour 11th day of the 11th month). They are all dead now from old age, as
you too will be given time.

So to the end Andy will you enrich the soil or pollute it? For of dust you
are and to dust you will return.
