No, Dave.
I started this debate based on KB2VXA's tagline. I remembered that,
As a boy, I had done a lot of reading on the origins and originators of
all things electrical. People like Faraday, Amp‚re, Dr Ohm and, of course,
Heinrich Herz.

Hertz, like a lot of his contemporaries, was fascinated by the aplications
of electromagnetic fields. He was the first to seriously experiment with
dipoles, even though one of the scientists at the RA had demonstrated in
passing, that rod aerials of the same length did resonate. It is perfectly
true that Hertz did not want his equipment polished and that, one day, when
he was experimenting with spark gaps between dipoles with balls rather than
spikes, he made it very clear to his cleaner that nothing must be polished,
she believed in everything being clean and shiny and, so, polished them,
despite his instructions. This lead to a brush discharge rather than a
simple spark, making ICW more of a possibility. This was a well known story
about Hertz when I was young.

Naturally, Hertz wondered what would happen if his aerials were placed
underground. He had experimented with various heights above ground and,
in the process, discovered the virtual aerial which appears to be at the
same distance below the earth as the real aerial is above it.
Another topic some people seem to think is a joke.

Not only did Hertz experiment with his ground wave transmitter but he found
that it had it's uses and had a number made up for the army so that they
could communicate without using a wire.

As for this being an 'April Fool's joke, I wouldn't have sent out such
bulls @WW as I thought it was only the UK that had April Fool's Day.

In any case, I did start them in July.

All the best. Ian.
