Ah, go ahead and read it even if you're in the UK. (;->)
Seems to me you have pretty much the US power distribution system with 
two minor differences.
First is the voltage as expected, but what's the frequency Kenneth?
The other is how the transformers are connected to homes. Here, a 4800V 
trio (between phases) is run and instead of the wye or star as it is 
sometimes called being taken off the secondary, it's taken off the 
primaries. A single phase transformer primary is connected from phase to 
neutral and the 230V center tapped secondary feeds typically 4 to 6 homes 
from a 500A winding. 230 is taken between the outer ungrounded legs and 
115V from an outer leg to grounded center tap, neutral. In a 230V 
appliance, the case is connected to neutral for ground fault protection 
and a ganged breaker employed to shut down the circuit entirely. A short 
to ground trips one side and it mechanically switches the other.
The transformers are staggered on the phases to balance the load instead 
of staggering the seconaries as you do. Same difference. (;->)
In residential light load areas, a single primary feeder is connected to 
one phase in the main trio and those are also staggered.
