Hello Charlie and all,
To address your points directly and inform others of further detail,
ZoneAlarm is a free download and works perfectly well. It is easy to
configure, it prompts you here and there as it encounters the programs
you use on the Internet. Just know which programs to allow access and
which not to. Then some are configured as servers, know them too. You'll
have it all figured out in no time. If you use it, and I hope you do,
remember that the versions you must pay for have bells and whistles not
really needed. Another thing is the old firewall must be deleted
COMPLETELY since they are TSRs and will conflict with each other. That
will leave you guessing what's wrong!
The general opinion is Norton has too many shortcomings and is harder to
configure. Thier anti virus software is worse, makes too many mistakes,
telling you harmless .exe files are viruses. To make matters worse, it
fails to recognize far to many REAL viruses!
I use McAfee and keep it up to date. Nary a problem of any sort! I have
recommended it to several Norton users and when they wiped Noron and ran
McAfee, it took quite some time cleaning up Nortons mess! From that point
on, no more goofy happenings in computer land.
The best advice I can give is to dump Norton from the HD and install
ZoneAlarm and McAfee. You'll be glad you did and have NOTHING to loose.
FYI, after installing McAfee, update immediately. The data file is always
out of date and is of minimum size. This may take quite a while on line
to get all the patches, just be prepared. Best bet is start the download
and go to bed, hi.
Hmmm, that was an interesting typo I just noticed, "Noron". It stays!
Oh, before I forget, Norton AV also must be deleted completely before
installing ANY other program. NEVER ave more than ONE firewall or AV
because of conflicts between TSRs that will keep you guessing.
