Hi  all  out  there  in  packetland.  Have been following with interest the
discussion on balloons.  Just a few points I think are wrong.  First on the
plane wing.  I seem to remember that about two thirds of the lift is
provided by the differential pressure.  The rest of the lift is provided by
the wind straiking the underside of the wing.  The other thing is that to
have lift a light gas must be confined - as in a balloon.  Mixed together
gasses are very racist and dont talk to one another.  Dont even acknowledge
each others existance.  For those interested consult a reasonable
encyclopoedia under the heading 'Daltons Law of Partial Pressures'.  It is
a simple fact that gasses at normal pressures and temperatures dont
stratify in either the atmosphere, or in a sealed container.  Helium doesnt
rise to the top of the atmophere.  Its distribution is the same as if no
other gas were present.  In my opinion, that of a voice in the wilderness,
a lot of the present trouble with the ozone layer is that as we burn oxygen
out of the atmosphere, it is shrinking down through the nitrogen where it
is not available to the full effect of the Suns ultraviolet radiation.  For
every ton of petrol we burn, we convert about 10 tons of elemental oxygen
to various oxides...
