the current in the field winding in light load situations. Where variable
load conditions existed as with grinders, a small generator was connected
to the shaft and a DC feedback regulator circuit employed as a governor.
That's all gone now except in old equipment. AC operation and control is
now used right down to AC traction in Diesel electric locomotives. One of
the first manufacturers was General Electric and thier "AC" series
locomotives are widely used.
BTWractice of it because it's very hard
on the battery!
