Hi Kevin,
Thanks a whole big bunch for the explanation of how film frames mate it
to TV fields. Everybody including this Yank who has been not seeing what
he has been looking at all his life now understands.
Technically, you are right when you get down to "brass tacks", there
aren't any TV frames, only fields. Now I begin to wonder if the vertical
scanning rate of 60Hz was chosen to comply with power line frequency or
the other way round.
Actually, the NTSC system is NOT based on 60Hz, but the H scanning rate
of 15.75Khz. Every signal, all subcarriers are based on this frequency.
That started with B&W and when color came along the H scan rate was
lowered by 3% to comply with the 3.58somethingorotherMhz chroma
subcarrier.
Funny thing, I used to be a TV man until the Japanese flooded the US
market with disposable sets. I had to know what was in the box and what
made it tick, but then again, I just fixed them, not invented them, hi.
