Hi Evert,
It looks like we BOTH write with tongue planted firmly in cheek. (;->) My
"kick" wasn't with you, but that silly school. FYI, after graduation I
had to can just about everything they taught me and start over. They
taught (and still teach) that Bell invented the telephone when he did
not. Watson, his "assistant" was the actual inventor of a FORM of the
device, Bell was merely the financial backer who spent more time at his
school for the deaf than in the lab. Having already made a name for
himself AND being RICH, he took credit, a condition Watson couldn't
effectively fight in court. THEN his device proved impractical ad
dangerous in everyday use because his electrolytic microphone not only
couldn't accurately reproduce speech, but contained ACID which could harm
the user. It took Edison to invent the carbon microphone under contract
with the Bell Telephone Company to make a practical device. Because of
this and other inventions to facilitate switching and other essential
functions AND being a shrewd businessman, Edison later held controlling
interest in the company. So, who invented the modern telephone and
started the Bell Telephone Company? THOMAS EDISON!
BTW, if you hear a 50-60~ hum in your telephone it's not Tesla's AC
leaking in, there is line leakage to ground. Yeah, I know a bit of
telephone technology too. (;->)
OH! Before I close, the bit about Bell and Edison goes back well before
the carbon mike. Both Bell and Edison were working to develop the
multiplex telegraph and the telephone was purely incidental. Or as some
say, ACCIDENTAL.
