Technically the unit that illuminates is a lamp and the unit you plug it
into is a luminaire - or if you are from the world of the theatre then it
is a lantern.

WOOPS! Brian,
what is commonly known as a bulb when refering to a tulip or daffodil
should more correctly be called a CORM.
It is nice to see some humour getting into the subject though.
