Hello Hugh,  and all other rail fans,

as M1BYT and VK2AAB have explained before, catenaries are the overhead
wires used to supply electric trains with power. Maybe the word is more
usual in the French language, but in the "UIC railway dictionary" it is
listed. French: "catenaire", English: "catenary".

For the question of Andy GM7HUD:  Yes, multi-voltage locomotives are in
use since a couple of years. For example here in Germany, DB-locos type
"181" for the traffic between Germany and France/Luxembourg were intro-
duced in the 1970's! They are designed for 15.000 v 16 2/3 Hz and 25.000 v
50 Hz and were very successful and reliable in service.

At that time, also many experiments were done in AC/DC locos for the
service with DC electrified countries 1,5 kv (Netherlands) and 3 kv
(Belgium, Italy). But with not so good success - the locos often failed.

But now in the latest years, with the introduction of three phase ac
traction technology due to the progress in power electronics, the
construction of multi-voltage AC/DC locomotives became much more easier
bringing very good results.
So, surely the Eurostar trains are one of the most modern types in the
world. Similar to the French "Thalys" train, which runs between Paris
and Cologne and covers three different current systems: 25.000 v 50 Hz
(France), 3 kv DC (Belgium) and 15.000 v 16 2/3 Hz (Germany).
