Hello Hugh,
Cantenaries are the overhead wires for the trains to pick up their
power. Usually here, anyway, with a heavy cable which droops in a curve
between supports and has hangers which hold in a straight line the actual wire
against which the pantogragh on the train presses.
As a matter of interest trains here are 1,500 volt DC. They have been since
electrification of the suburban network in the early 1920s.
Electric locos are used for freight, mainly over the Blue Mountains.
