Which is what I said. So you need to have at least M1L1 or you'll not hear
jack!

The problem is you have a softmodem and you need to ensure you have all the
drivers and helper software installed. A softmodem does a lot of the
processing on the PC's Pentium rather than in chips on the modem card. This
helped to keep down the cost of the modem. So if you dont have all the
software installed, then there wont be any way to get the modem audio to
come out of the PC audio. 

Have you entered "Smartlink 56k Voice Modem" into Google? There's lots of
info on the additional software that's needed. Too much for packet. Also
links to the latest Win 2k/XP drivers and utilities. Worth checking out for
yourself.

Dont forget to ensure you have an adequately uptodate Ghost image or
restore point set BEFORE you install anything you might download.
