Hi Felix and readers,
Most of today's anti-virus programs have the ability to scan files as
they are downloaded and transferred or moved and upon opening
automatically. It's a good idea (naturally) to have these functions
enabled.
You're right, never trust a program to do your common sense thinking for
you, I don't have to go into detail for those with a bit of smarts. The
best defense is not a good offense, it's your brain.
Another good idea is to use a good anti-spyware program and of course
keep it, your anti-virus and operating system updated. Once a week is
good enough for manual users and once a month is sufficient for the OS.
There are several freeware programs available for download via the
Internet but I have found them not quite as good as the professional ones
but better than nothing. Don't forget a firewall, it will ask permission
for new items wanting to access the Internet so when in doubt, DON'T. If
you don't know what it is NEVER allow acces, rather see where the
firewall says it's located and check it out, it just might be malware
imbedded in an otherwise harmless file. If so it can easily be deleted.
No software offers complete protection so USE YOUR HEAD.
