Hello Albert ZS1BA et al. (Revised bulletin)

I typed this reply yesterday 31/Aug but before I sent it I saw a reply from
Sten, ZS6CFC. I agree with all Sten has to say about trying to repair a HD.
Dust can be a problem, but with care it should not stop you from trying to
fix your drive if you think it's worth it. Maybe valuable data, or like me
you naturally just want to have a go.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original bulletin...
I have had a hard disk fail (electronically) and opened the case to see if
I could recover the otherwise lost data. As you have supposed, the disk
is similar to a CD in stiffness, and the heads ride clear of the surface
by means of air flow. The Bernoulli effect.

There is no problem replacing either the disk or the electronics, provided
you have a steady hand, and reasonable eyesight. My 79 year old eyes are
OK with a stereo magnifier (X3) and the usual small tools, tweezers, screw
drivers, pointed probes, and a static strap.

But! The problem is that each drive puts down its own 'pattern' on the disk.
Not only tracks, but directory structure, headers and trailers. I was not
able to find an exact replacement for the electronics in a hard drive of the
same manufacturer and model. They even seem to vary in each model number,
possibly depending on which factory they are made in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Added remarks....
Here I can add to Sten's remarks, and suggest you look for the manufacturer's
web site to confirm the model, and look for a replacement. The replacement
I have in mind is a secondhand one at a swapmeet of computer junk shop.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have always been a repair-first-buy-if-I-must type and have-a-go-or-bust!
So, have a go. If it means losing data anyway, no harm done. It is a tricky
job that can be done by a well equipped technicion.

Be careful with the hard disk mounting, and just replace the electronics.

73. Dick. VK3ABK.
