hi All, especially Albert,

The easiest is just to take an old, or defective, drive and just take it
apart, at least the cover of the disk area. Be aware that there will be at
least one screw under the label.
For those who do not have an old disk, I'll put up some pics at
www.pe1biv.net/harddisk/ later.

I guess in general, this is completely right.
But, the head amplifier is normally located as close as possible to the
heads; so, in the drivebay. This might also be the failed part.

In theory this would indeed work, but as all disks sort of are 'tuned' in
the factory, I guess there will be a very small chance that it will work
well.
But, you never know if you don't try it. If you are sure that one disk is
only faulty in the PCB on the back, while the other has a crashed disk,
putting the parts together that are OK might give a working assembly again.
I guess however, you should perform a low level format using the software
from the manufacturer to get things 'tuned' again. Or, just use as is.
