Hello , especially OM Albert , ZS1BA
Harddrive repair : Never open the drive Compartment ! The
tolerances are such that any dust will have detrimental
effect. Repairs to the DISK (proper) have to be done in a
clean-room (compartment) and are probably only done today to
recover VALUABLE data.
A drive can have more than 1 disk up to 6 are common, and
the relevant arms/heads to read/write top/bottom.
The arms are parked on a designated spot and when the disk
spins up to speed the head(s) rides on an air cushion of
about 5 mu (Micro-Inches).
So if you are shure that the one drive you have is
mechanically defect, and the other electronically on the
board , it might be possible to transfer the electronics
over. IF ! both drives are the same make and modell.
If these drives are made by Seagate, there is a testing and
evaluating programme available on the internet.
FOR South Africa : Probaly the smallest drive available
today is around 40 G. price around 800 R . If made by
Seagate , there is an overlay programme available (WEB) that
allows this drive to be installed in place of older, smaller
drives.
There are US based companies which still sell "Legacy"
Drives.(E.G. smaller than 40G)
Are you shure the disks are defective? If there are both the
same, and one is noisy (Bearing Problems ?) Then consider -
is the other of the same age and usage? Then it is not
worthwile the effort.
If you need more answers/help :
