Hi Harry and all,

Your headlamps must be quite different than ours, the typical sealed beam
lamp draws 10A. That's WAY too much current for small gel packs.

Now here's a novel approach for scanner backup power. Most have a 12VDC
input jack as well as one for the AC mains and the 12V one is usually
connected across the power supply output before the on-off switch.
Connect a gel pack to that jack and it will be float charged as long as
the scanner is plugged in. If in operation when the mains go out it'll
never notice.
Does that give you any ideas? Sure, the DC supply in any small
ac/battery radio or "boom box" makes a neat charger, just smash the kids
annoying noise maker and use it. Give him the rest of the pieces as a
reminder that kids should be seen and not heard.
