Subject: Softw. MFJ 1278B ?

Hi TNX for reading,

I recently bought a TNC MFJ 1278B together with the original software (mfj
1289).

Does anyone know if I can also use other software on this modem?
And if so where to find it ??

Tnx de PA3DWC, Gerrit

It's not very common, but try around 14063 kHz or so.
The new mode MFSK16 (http://www.qsl.net/zl1bpu/ for information)
is a bit easier to use and is similar in principle (ie multiple
frequency shift keying).

I do not know of any others that 'do it all' but you can find most FSK
modes covered by free or inexpensive software. Which modes were you
interested in?
PSK has dozens of free packages.
RTTY / AMTOR works very well with TrueTTY (DXSOFT.COM)
SSTV / FAX ... search the web, a number of good freebies for sound card
are out there.
Others modes are available too but you'll need to search for them.
The other way to go is to buy an all mode TNC (PK-232 etc.), they
usually come with the software, cover most modes and are available used
for a decent price!
...
Please... if you do find an inexpensive all mode sound card decoder
please POST it here.... I, and others, would be interested.

With a deficit of 5 Trillion, we have to be creative in ways of manufacturing
more money, to pay for the programs our representatives think we need.

There's a distinction that should be made here -- Europe
is "socialist" in the sense of social engineering: high
taxes going to support a welfare state; belief that the
government needs to intervene in peoples' lives because
the individual is society's responsibility; things like that.

It doesn't mean that capitalism is extinct in Europe.

As i see it, if a GOVERNMENT were to subsidize the phones
(in Europe telecommunications are mostly government-owned,
right?) that would be a socialistic practice, but if a carrier
subsidizes the phones, that is NOT socialism as it is
commonly defined.

Whoever is doing the subsidizing, tho, is engaging in some
kind of social engineering: trying to get people to do
certain things, live in certain kinds of ways. Some of us
think it's better for the engineering to be decentralized,
rather than all in the hands of one monolithic organization
(like the government).

So if a ham radio packet-internet gateway provides e-mail
service to the radio-side users, it's illegal because they
could get that service from a commercial provider? I don't
think so. In 1997-98 i was doing just this, and was in
communication with dozens of other hams doing it as well.
Where are you getting the fuel for this allegation?

Exactly.

The internet has had a democratizing influence on amateur
radio -- the gods can't STAND it.
