Now *I'm* baffled: how can you be a ham for 17 years and have
such difficulty figuring out these interconnections? Are the
makers of the hardware or software doing something wrong?
How can they do it better?

Then why aren't you checking the pinout as printed in the manual of your
rig? Often it is printed in two places: one time in the general section
where it shows how you can connect your own stuff, and one time in the
schematic, where you can trace leads and derive their functionality.

One can assume that these pinouts are correct, the worst problem can be
that you don't know for sure if it is a view of the outside of the rig or
the front side of the plug. But often there are pin numbers.

If you are allowing messages and content that do not meet the criteria
(As set by the FCC) for legal traffic, you are illegal.
If you are providing a service to others which is also available through
commercial providers, you are illegal.
If you encrypt your data, you are illegal.

You really need to READ part 97, and read it for content. The rules are
in place for a reason. That reason is to keep guys like you from using
the ham bands for commercial ventures.

I have nothing against the technology that you are proposing, provided
it be used on a frequency band that is approved for that type of
traffic.
