decency. Wake up and smell the coffee. There are other issues to consider
here that are MUCH more important than misusing the Ham bands for selfish,
trivial purposes.

I'm not even "utterly certain" there is no porn on 75 M SSB.

You see a different internet than I do.
Guess one finds what one looks for.

This has nothing to do with ham radio, I'm outa here.

Charles,

I've been on the internet since before it was the internet.

Anyone who thinks porn is rampant there is simply
going out of their way to look for it.

The internet has a large amount of useful information,
try it out sometime, you might be surprised!

Right. There have even been examples of porn site advertisements getting
into worldwide packet BBS bulletins which were actually digested forms of
Internet mailing lists (about amateur radio topics).

Subject: GPS + APRS Question.

Hello, I've been guided to this newsgroup for info on APRS.

What I want to do is set up a "marine distress locator" for my final year
project.
Which will comprise of many GPS recievers and some method of sending there
NMEA data out to my PC.
I found out about APRS but unsure how to incorporate it into this project.

Questions:

1) What does TNC stand for? I understand that it processes NMEA data into
information packets.
2) Does a TNC actually transmit the packets ? If not what type of
transmitter would I use and how much would it cost.
3) My PC will be used to pick up the APRS, but how? What device do I need? A
radio????? What type, and how much will it cost? I have a AR8000 scanner
could this be used????
4) Since my Degree is Software Design I will be writing a program to pick up
the data recieved by the radio(if this is what is used) what format will
this be in? NMEA or APRS?

Thanks for your time and please feel free to give any thoughts.

Regards
Tobias.

A TNC is a Terminal Node Controller, a device invented in the eighties
to use a dumb terminal to send packets. It is similar to what an X.25
guru would call a PAD. (Packet Assembler-Disassembler)

But today you don't really need a TNC, there are other simple devices
that are dedicated to the task of sending the NMEA data as a packet.

They are usually very simple PIC-based boards.

>2) Does a TNC actually transmit the packets ? If not what type of

No, you need a separate transmitter.
First you need to look at your options w.r.t. licensing. Then you can
decide what frequency to use, how much power, what kind of antenna, etc.
(depending on the range)
This together will determine the cost.

You need a receiver matching your transmitter (the scanner will probably
be OK in most cases) and a soundcard or an AFSK modem or a TNC.

>4) Since my Degree is Software Design I will be writing a program to pick up

This depends on what you send. You can send the NMEA data (this is one
allowed format of APRS data) or use the more compact APRS formats with
conversion between the GPS and transmitter (the PIC-based device will
do that, a TNC won't).
On the PC, it all depends on what you want to write. Plug and play
solutions are available (all the way from soundcard or modem to the display
of a map with moving icons), but you can always ignore part of that and
write your own software for that layer.
This can include DSP of the audio, decoding of the raw bits into packets,
decoding of the packets to relevant position information, and processing
of that information and displaying in the form you like.

Hi Boss,
I have received a while back a copy of the article. (It was in QST back
about 1990/91). I just need to find it. I don't remember if I saved it on my
