You just made my point.

Nobody sits in their cars and runs autopatches for jollies. But
autopatches have been used any number of times in emergency situations
which is one of the reasons ham radio exists. Try calling a cop with
your keyboard & mouse.

If you can't tell the difference between getting into the Internet via
some radio modem and a dialup modem the radio is a ham radio
no-counter.

I can go out and subscibe to a mobile Internet access service any time
I choose to do so without any radio license. Where's the big
"technological leap which is goint to take ham radio into the 21st
century" in doing the same thing on the ham bands??

And yeah, most of us want do it the "hard way" or we wouldn't be hams
in the first place. I don't expect you to get it.

Subject: PSK31 (and other modes) questions
1. Where can I find software for PSK31 and other modes (cw, pactor, rtty, etc)
for a 486sx laptop running win 3.1?
2. Can anybody send me a com port interface to be used with a Icom IC706? I
have physical limitations that prevent me from building one. I do not have
much in my ham radio budget as I am an unemployed graduate student.
Please respond directly to redberd95@aol.com

Don't want to sound negative, Randy, but you may find that your laptop is
pretty light for running PSK31 programs. I really don't know which will
run on 3.1, but the most likely would be the original program by G3PLX.
IF you use some sort of TNC for pactor and rtty, etc., any terminal
program will work ok, but since so much DSP processing is done in the CPU
and soundcard, it takes a little horsepower and memory to handle PSK31.
If your SX is as low as 25 MHz, I seriously doubt that it will handle any
of the PSK31 programs, but try it and see!
I am sorry but I have no info to aid you with the 706. I suggest that you
post on the icom reflector and the PSK31 reflector for help in that area.
I can empathize with your situation. While I was a grad student at MIT
back in the mid-50's I was fortunate to have a Research Assistant
position in one of the labs there, but considering the pay I received, it
was like being virtually unemployed. Hang in there - even these days
shall pass.
