features to the program that couldn't be done in other languages."

Subject: PacComm Pactor I Controller. Opinions?
I own an old Paccomm Pactor Controller with the 2.02 firmware, PCB
revision 1.31 and a SN ORO5xx. A couple of weeks ago there was a
discussion on this news group of this Controller that painted a
somewhat negative picture of its capabilities. I have never put this
unit on the air and was wondering if I should upgrade to a different
firmware? I would also like a few general comments on this particular
unit for use in this day and age. 73, Ron, K4KTB, Tulsa

I don't know about serial and revision numbers, but I had one of the
later releases of the PacComm pactor I controllers. It performed great
on amtor and pactor. The shortcoming on RTTY was the lack of a print
squelch. It should still be an acceptable unit for RTTY and great for
Pactor-I. Amtor has pretty much gone by the wayside.
Since you already own it, put it on the air.

Thanks for the answer. The unit seems to work as it should. I was
hoping that someone could tell me if this was one of the later units
and if there was a later firmware revision than the 2.02. 73, Ron,

Hi Ron,
I had one of the first PacComm Pactor 1 controllers. It worked great on
RTTY and AMTOR. But on Pactor 1, it was terrible. I think PacComm may have
cut some corners and may not have properly implemented RFI prevention
measures (like RFI bypass capacitors on all the lines connected to the TNC).
During Pactor links, the lights would light up strangely and links would
drop etc. I did not have problems on AMTOR. I suspect that transmissions
in Pactor 1 ARQ were just long enough for the apparent RFI problems to
arise.
I returned the TNC for a refund. I heard that PacComm later corrected these
hardware problems. If you experience these problems, you might be able to
return it to PacComm for repairs.
I heard rumours that Pacomm may no longer support the PacComm Pactor 1
controller. But I understand that the PacComm Pactor 1 controller is just a
CLONE of the original SCS PTC 1 controller. You may be able to get software
updates etc from SCS at www.scs-ptc.com
Yes, the PacComm Pactor 1 controller does not have a RTTY squelch. (But
many TNC's like the KAM also do not have a RTTY squelch). If you plan to
use the PacComm Pactor 1 controller on RTTY just hook it up to the speaker
jack of your rig and use your rig's volume control as the squelch. It
should work great.
But if I remember correctly, the PacComm Pactor 1 controller does NOT have a
host mode NOR does it allow the transmission of binary files. Also, the
AIRMAIL software used to access the new Winlink 2000 Mailboxes does NOT
support the PacComm Pactor 1 controller. If you plan to send binary files
(or wish to access Winlink 2000 MBO's), you may want to consider trading
your PacComm Pactor controller for another brand.
But for most RTTY, AMTOR and Pactor 1 QSO's, the PacComm Pactor 1
controller should do a great job (assuming you do not experience any RFI
problems).
