6. There you have it! Now when send off your letters, you have become part of
the
profitale mail order of mailing list business. Citizens are simply sending you
a
dollar to be added to your mailing list. This is a legal service many
Americans
use
as a means of producing income. Refer to Title 18, Sec. 1302 and 1341 of the
United
States Postal and Lottery laws for more specific information.
Since this is income, you are expected to contact the IRS and pay taxes on it.
Sample response scenario (based on a 7.6% response rate)
You sent off 200 letters, and 15 people sent you $1 ......$15.00
Those 15 people sent off 200, 225 people sent you $1......$225.00
They sent off 200 and 3375 people sent you $1.............$3375.00
They send off 200 and 50625 people sent you $1............$50625.00
And the 50625 people sent off 200 letters, and 759375 sent you
$1........$759375

Subject: PacComm Pactor I Controller. Opinions?
I am the one that discussed the PacComm PacTOR CONTROLLER!
I purchased it NEW in Feb 1999, from Dentronics at the Florida Orlando
HamCation!
It works FINE. In fact it amazes me sometimes when the noise comes up, and
it recovers errors, that sound like static to me.
However - several things!
Pactor-II is the 'recommended' new standard for Digital HF Communications.
PacComm no longer seems interested in supporting their product. After trying
repeatedly to get the proper manual, with updated info that would truly
represent the version that I have - ver 1.9/2.02 level 1, they stopped
responding to me!
TOTALLY!
They never supplied the actual manual that showed their own PC layout, nor
the correct Command Set.
I had heard that they fell out with the PTC German Originators, and don't
appear to be producing their later PTC-II either.
The PTC Group graciously forwarded an updated manual to me, but it also
doesn't completely corespond to my PacComm made controller.
Pactor 1 is becoming obsolete. Very few stations are working keyboard to
keyboard on Pactor anymore. Only the connections to major BBS stations
appear to be common! PSK-31 is the way to go for Amateur to Amateur
contacts!
MOST Pactor 1 and Pactor-II is being used for BBS operation, and utilize
Internet for E-Mail! GREAT, you say! Especially if you go RVing, or Sailing,
or Camping in the Great Outdoors! E-mail by Radio - wonderful!
BUT, now, more of the Internet Accessing BBSes (WinLink) are also using
free, but proprietary software, Airmail 2000, and they no longer support
keyboard contacts. Also GREAT, right? Not quite! Again, this software, while
available FREE, is limited.
YOUR PacComm is NOT SUPPORTED. Neither if you use a Mac, Linux, OS-2, Unix,
Sun Workstations, Dumb Terminals, or other Computer Platforms.
The 'lock-in' is becoming tighter. Since Pactor-II technology is
proprietary, and STC has the key, only they will be allowing new controllers
to be built!
Where is this headed?
Downward, I suspect, and hope!
I have been in contact with the Originator of Airmail KE6RK, and he 'may'
try to get the PacComm, or the equivalent PTC-1, supported for the program.
He claims only several people have 'asked'! Several BBS Sysops, N0ZO, and
K4CJX, suggested that I should upgrade out of the 'Horse and Buggy' days
when I mentioned my misgivings. The PTC-II is around $950, and the PTC-IIe
(economy) is $649. I paid $265, 1 year and 4 months ago! Still a New Horse
and Buggy to me! New COMPLETE HF Stations are available for less than that
$950! The price for this controller seems Very High to me! New Pentium III
Computers aren't much more!
And I guess that Windows is also the ONLY way to Compute! Go and ask Bill,
he'll confirm that!
Yah right!
Smarter, and wiser, but disappointed!
