Subject: PKS31 SIGNAL REPORTS
I am new to the world of digital modes and am enjoying the adventure ! I
have Digipan up and running on my Kachina....as PKS31 is a visual mode
"point and click" on the waterfall how do you translate bright yellow/green
or dark and light blue signal traces into signal reports, ie 559 537 etc.
Am I missing something.

Beats me. The only bona fide S9+20 meter readings I get come from my
neighbor down the street ;-). RST is subjective. Alas, so are most meters.
Reports I give are very subjective, but I try to be, er, uh, consistent in
my subjectivity.
The QRP-heads will tell you "100% copy" is all that really counts.
Some programs, such as the various WinPSKs, and the very beta but promising
gpsk31 for Linux, can show a spectrum mode where you can roughly measure in
dB how strong the sig is relative to adjacent background noise. I suppose
that would quantify things a little.

Public school all the way, bay-bee. So much for "socialization."

Subject: problems connecting to a packet bbs
I'm just getting acquainted with packet radio. Yesterday I got my tnc hooked
up (a unit from symek in Germany) and it seems to be working just fine and I
have been trying to connect to a bbs on 145.01.
When in monitor mode, I can see packets on this frequency periodically,
although there doesn't seem to be a lot of traffic.
When I try to connect, my transmitter keys up just fine, and I see myself
sending packets out to SEABBS.
Occasionally SEABBS will respond and I'm able to get a connect. Maybe one
out of a hundred connection attempts will result in a connect. here's an
example:
* c seabbs
1:fm KD7GND to SEABBS ctl SABM+
1:fm KD7GND to SEABBS ctl SABM+
1:fm KD7GND to SEABBS ctl SABM+
1:fm KD7GND to SEABBS ctl SABM+
1:fm KD7GND to SEABBS ctl SABM+
1:fm SEABBS to KD7GND ctl UA-
* (1) CONNECTED to 1:SEABBS *
1:fm SEABBS to KD7GND ctl I00^ pid F0
SEA:N7FSP-10} Please wait, trying n7fsp
SEA:N7FSP-10} Please wait, trying n7fsp
1:fm SEABBS to KD7GND ctl RR0+
1:fm KD7GND to SEABBS ctl RR1-
1:fm SEABBS to KD7GND ctl RR0+
1:fm KD7GND to SEABBS ctl RR1-
1:fm SEABBS to KD7GND ctl RR0+
1:fm KD7GND to SEABBS ctl RR1-
1:fm SEABBS to KD7GND ctl RR0+
1:fm KD7GND to SEABBS ctl RR1-
So far, I have been unable to get beyond this point. After the packets shown
above, SEABBS stops sending me packets, and my TNC disconnects.
I've tried things like typing a ? to see what commands are possible on the
BBS, but there is no response.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks very much for your help
Jim

try lenghting ur txdelay (txd),this is the time between ur transmitter key
up and data sent.I need to do this in warmer wx.
try different power settings on ur rig. what prgm you using? tnc?
