information. Time to look for another mentor. Ya might want to hold off asking
questions for a while and get a little background on the subject. There is a
ton
of info out there on tncs and interfaces.
FYI:
The 1270 is just a serial modem type device with several rather odd-ball
control
command sets to choose from. Assuming you are using the default tapr command
set
any dumb-terminal emulation program may be used to get the tnc 'talking'.

Many of the standard programs work. Search on Icom software and you will
find some of them. If you can't find anything suitable drop me a note and I
will dig something out.

You need a gizmo to level translate from the Icom to the computer.
Available from Icom and others or relatively easy to build.

But the ARRL survey said that most Hams rearely or never use CW. Did they lie
to the ARRL or what?

Is that what it said? I think you've managed to convolute the results
of a survey which I thought had some badly worded questions on it.

I don't think there is any civil or criminal penalty for lying to the
ARRL.

Subject: PSK INTERFACE FOR FT-900

A single 2N2222 should function adequately as the switch for your PTT
line. Connect the RTS line from the serial port through a 1K or so
resistor to the base. Ground the emitter and connect the collector to the
PTT line. When the RTS line goes from about -10 volts to +10, the
transistor will be turned on and the PTT line will be grounded through
the collector/emitter circuit. A current of 15 ma can be easily handled
as can the 13.5 volts open-circuit voltage on the line.

If you have any trouble, try different values of base resistor until you
find what turns on the transistor.

You can, of course, use a relay provided that the current it draws for
the coil does not overload the RTS line. But, the transistor is much
cheaper, silent, and works with no time delay either opening or closing
the PTT circuit.

Subject: Rtty and PSK 31 interface Help needed

Rtty and PSK31 have nothing to do with the CT-17 level converter. All
you need to do is take audio between the rig and the sound card plus a
PTT line. Do a search on "PSK31" and look at some of the information
available on how it works and how to do the interface. You can be
receiving with nothing more than a shielded cable from Radio Shack.
