2) See what the barometer shows and
3) get your altitude from the difference between the two readings - each
milliBar difference indicates a 28' difference.

ps: You might find more detailed information about GPS altitude and earth
models by starting to browse at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk
That university, together with one in Edinburgh, developed an improved
model of the earth.

Subject: News about BARTG

Hello. Many of you may have come across one of the BARTG RTTY contests
quite recently.
* Our 48 hour HF RTTY contest is believed to be
both the second biggest and also
 the oldest HF RTTY contest.
* Our annual Sprint contest is also
 becoming very popular.

>From some of the comments enlsoed with logs for these comtests it seems
that many of you do not know that BARTG is more than just a contest.

BARTG - the British Amateur Radio Teledata Group - was founded in 1959 to
promote the, then, new mode of RTTY. To-day, RTTY has been joined by
many more modes, such as AmTOR, PacTOR, PSK31 (we already offer an award
for PSK31) but our aim is the same - to promote datacoms within ham
radio.

We're a not-for-profit Group with an international membership. We warmly
welcome applications for membership from outside of the UK and our
friends in the USA are especially welcome.

You can email our membership secretary at
 mailto:members@bartg.demon.co.uk

and you can find out more about us at
 http://www.bartg.demon.co.uk

73 from Ian, G4EAN
(BARTG secretary and operator of the BARTG club station - G4ATG)

Subject: Will a GPS provide continuous, accurate altitude measurements?

GPS altitude is not very accurate, it will change at least +/-200 feet while
sitting in the same location. An light aircraft altimeter is accurate to
within +/-20 feet and assuming a constant error, you would get good relative
data while driving around. Might find one that no longer meets spec around
your
local airport. For all you ever wanted to know about GPS and more, check out
the following web site -http://joe.mehaffey.com.
