problems inherent with using Windows.

Another DOS program called PCTOR ver 3.08 by KC7WW also implements RTTY and
AMTOR protocols in the PC and uses a simple external modem that decodes and
generates mark/space signals.

Examples of simple external modems are old AEA CP-1, the newer AN93 DSP
modem (see TAPR for kit) or new Volks RTTY II modem. None are very
expensive.

For TERMAN93, the AN93 modem is the best since it has a DSP chip for
hardware memory ARQ.

Another approach is to use HAMCOMM 3.1 software and a simple HAMCOMM
interface (which costs about $15 US to build). Hamcomm 3.1 only implements
RTTY and AMTOR protocols in the PC. (But with the registered version you
can receive only PACTOR 1).

To summarize, Windows is a very poor OS for implementing in the PC timing
sensitive protocols like AMTOR and PACTOR. DOS is much better. (Don't be
fooled -- you typically can't run these DOS programs under a Windows DOS
box!)

There is another choice for an Operating System (OS) - LINUX. There are
programs out there that implement in a PC running LINUX the RTTY, AMTOR,
PSK31, SSTV, PACTOR and Packet protocols. All you need is a PC with a sound
card and the LINUX OS (and the software for these modes). I don't know
much about LINUX but apparently it is not as bad as Windows for implementing
"timing sensitive modes" like AMTOR and PACTOR.

Using the LINUX OS on a PC appears to be the best choice at this time for a
HAM that wishes to use his computer's sound card for RTTY, AMTOR, PACTOR,
PSK31, SSTV and Packet! Unfortunately, one must typically run separate
programs for each mode!

Going back to windows, IZ8BLY has written a great Windows program that uses
your sound card for the HELL fuzzy modes. (See JAN 2000 QST). The program
is easy to use and is free! Give it a try!

For the MAC and a sound card, there is multimode as mentioned in another
reply to your posting. It is really the only choice out there for a MAC
user.

I understand that MULTIMODE for WINDOWS is being developed. I can't wait to
try it out. But I suspect that it may not work well on the modes with
strict timing requirements like AMTOR and PACTOR. It is possible that
MULTIMODE for Windows may only PERMIT the reception of AMTOR and PACTOR but
NOT the transmission of AMTOR and PACTOR. Don't fault the software
developers, it is WINDOWS which is to blame!

In any event, It appears very unlikely that there will be ONE program for
either the MAC or PC that will allow one to receive and transmit ALL the
proprietary modes, like PACTOR II, GTOR, and CLOVER, using a sound card. At
this time, HAL, KANTRONICS and SCS do not appear very willing to licence the
use by others of their proprietary HF modes!

Subject: Ok, I am lost now.... HELP!!!

I got my circuit to work, the radio keys up when I access the com port from
dos. I tried using AGW drivers, they load it seems, and recognize the com
port and soundcard, I tried AGWTerm and it will produce audio, although
nothing like what I have hard packet to sound like, instead of the brap, I
get static hiss... and there is no reaction from the status indicator lights
on my taskbar.
I attempted to locate the PC/Flexnet stuff, but it seems that they fell off
the wagon, all I get are HTTP404 errors or DNS errors. Now I am stuck, tried
several searches on Infoseek and Yahoo... no good...
Thanks in advance

Hamish, it might interest you to know that PACTOR II will work at a
lower S/N ratio than PSK31. That means PACTOR II is a better low
power mode than PSK31.
