This is the first mobile I've seen where the faceplate panel _cannot_ be
attached to the main unit. Therefore it comes with the remote mount cable
and brackets.
(This takes a little getting used to. All my mobiles are on Gamber Johnson
Super Slide mounts. However I'm already seeing good reasons to have the
panel in view and handy. More later)
Oh, and Kewood points out in a separate carton insert that there are no
spare panels. Lose it, have it stolen, break it, or just want one for a
different vehicle and you are screwed, at least until some computer
software comes out.
This is a dual band 200 channel radio, and can do the standard 2m/440,
also 2m/2m, and I think 440/440. There is an integral 1200/9600 TNC, which
can be used split between bands for PACSAT work.
The "front" of the tranceiver where the panel normaly goes is covered with
6 (!) jacks, a DB9 serial, a submini phone jack for the GPS (uses the same
cable as the D7A), a round miniDIN for an external TNC or VC-C1 (for
SSTV), 4 pin mod jack for the panel cable, and 8 pin mod jack for the
mike.
This is the first mobile I've seen with an internal antenna duplexer, so
there is only one UHF antenna jack on the back, along wiht the power
leads, and programmable speaker jacks. Haven't explored these yet.
The front panel is a reversible yellow backlit LCD graphical display.
There are two sets of concentric knobs for band volume and squelch, and a
rotary encoder for channel, freq, character entry etc, and 10 soft
(programmable) function buttons plus the power button.
If you've seena D7A, this radio works a lot like it. Without consulting
the manual, I worked through the menus and was on APRS in maybe 15
minutes. There are station list screens, station detail screens, message
screens, and so on. You can run APRS from it easily.
The panel snaps onto a mounting bracket, which then can screw to a second
bracket to mount on the dash. This has a flange shaped like a peacock
tail, and has adhesive on it so you can shape it and stick it right to a
curved surface. (poor description, sorry) I haven't used this yet, I just
stuck the panel bracket to the dash with velcro.
Leave a lot of slack in the panel cable. It's handy to unsnap it and hold
it in your hands like a game controller to programming and messaging.
The other thing this radio will do is digipeat. Except for the price, you
could buy one of these, program it with the mike and panel, and have a
working digi in no time.
I'm still learning about it. Haven't tried plugging in a computer yet, and
the programming software is not yet available.
Post questions and I'll try to answer them.

I haven't seen any indication either way, yet.

I use an MFJ-1274 and for the program I use Paket 6.2, and they work great
with HF. you cant find any tuning beacons, but you have to use the stations
that are transmitting to other stations. On mine you have to have the baud
rate from the TNC to the radio at 300, and there is a switch that you have
to have set to HF instead of VHF. From the TNC to the computer the baud rate
is at 9600, and the terminal program baud rate is at 9600 also. IF you dont
have Paket 6.2, I can send a copy via e-mail

The Garmin GPSs can be upgraded by simply connecting them to the web,,
Im sure radios will go the same way.

That is a possible method, yes. It has the flaw that it can go totally
haywire when the packet is damaged and a length field is hit, but when
reasonable interface hardware (e.g. SCC card or TNC with well-designed
hostmode protocol) is used, it should work fine.
In the real world of really bad designs that are all too present in packet
radio (programs interpreting MONITOR output, KISS, the classical TNC
hostmode), it is better not to count on the integrity of the packet. In
such an environment, using a dedicated separator character that is
"escaped" when it occurs in the data is a more sturdy approach.
Of course, the receiving software could also do throrough checks on the
length fields, and when things somehow don't add up (i.e. the last length
field does not describe a field that ends at the exact end of the packet),
it could just discard the entire packet before real processing begins.
Apart from that, the idea of packing fields in a packet, and allowing
the receiver to ignore fields it does not know about or isn't interested
in, is just what I meant to say. The type fields should be well-managed,
of course. Else we end up with 25 types all describing a field with some
new attribute that was not in the first spec, with field contents that
are not entirely compatible (i.e. the situation that exists now).
