happened by accident. I'm in the SF Bay area, btw.)
I believe there's a schematic in the ax25-howto on how to make the
soundmodem cable. Linux
is a little fussy about what soundcards you use. I reccommend finding a
geniune creative Labs
Sound Blaster/Pro card with jumpers or Windows Sound System card. Right
now, Linux
soundmodem accesses the hardware directly rather than using the Linux sound
drivers --
which kind of sucks if you have a sound card that has a Linux driver, but
isn't supported by sound modem.
The default mixer settings on Linux, I found, were a little funky and my
speaker is hooked to the mike input
rather than line input. So, that's something to check if you have trouble.
The SB Pro card is nice,
because it has a little pot, right on the back of the card for setting the
output level.
Sv2agw also works with soundcards, and it supports any sound card. Though
it also is a little
finicky about what soundcards work at 9600. Though sv2agw, I believe will
run almost anything
at 1200 baud. I think sv2agw only supports serial port t/r switching,
though I'm not sure about that.

Subject: Decoding packet with a soundcard in Windows
Many thanks for info.
I downloaded the SV2AGW packet engine and will give it a try with my sound
card for fun. (I already have a 1200 bd and 9600 bd TNC).
I see that the SV2AGW packet engine will also work with TNCs in KISS mode.
I may try that also. The real benefit that I can see is that the SV2AGW
engine supports not only AX25 but also IP/TCP... Have you tried IP/TCP with
SV2AGW?? (I don't think that the SV2AGW engine will replace NOS since I
don't believe that the BBS accepts both AX25 and IP/TCP connects etc..)
I will also give LINUX a try one day. I have an old 386 with a 16 bit Sound
Blaster card collecting dust but the hard drive is small -- only 70MB.
Probably too small for LINUX. The 386 is so old that I cannot easily
upgrade the hard drive. I will have to look for another old computer for
LINUX experimentation. I hear that there are LINUX drivers not only for
packet but also for PACTOR, RTTY etc. Sounds great!
