My $00.02 worth..
I have three computers running here, most of the time.
One, an old 386, running Digi_Ned APRS digipeater with an old Hercules
type
monocolour monitor. This gave me heaps of agro on HF reception till I
tried
various video cards and found one that is almost noise free. To test if
the
noise comes from the video card, just unplug the video lead while
listening
to the noise, if it goes away try another card, this goes for the more
modern colour cards too. Sometimes, one of those clip on ferrite chokes
attatched to the computer end of the video lead helps.
This same computer uses a real old psu but it seems fairly quiet.
The quietest PSU I have is a "Compaq" model, it has an RF mains filter, as
a standard fitting, built into the mains input socket. So, when you're
poking around at the "Junque Sales", look for one of these.
Another trick is to run a common earth lead to all your gear, including
the
computers, and tag it to a reliable earthing stake outside, not a water
pipe as they tend to be plastic these days. I have one about 2metres deep
just outside my door, I entertain the neighbours by watering it regularly,
with the garden hose of course.. I tell them I'm growing a new mast, HI.
