OK, I'm going to describe the reaction of members of the public to my
outdoor portable shack. That means it's REAL and seen by complete
strangers.
Firstly, I have an unusual radio station when outdoors. UK readers will
probably be sick of hearing about it now ;-) The best way to describe it
to an international audience is that it's very similar to a golf caddy
or sack barrow. The bottom houses a 12v car battery, the top is an IC706,
auto atu and 27ft alloy aerial. I also have an old WW2 Morse Key which
straps to my leg.
When I go to the beach I get LOTS of interest.
I get strangers wanting to take photo's of me, want to sit and listen
to it, talk about Morse etc. My contraption has inspired several copycat
systems and old licencees to get back on the air. This week I even had
a visitor who's father actually worked with Mr Marconi himself !
Here's what I have found in all honesty:
* The public like the idea of a "contraption" like mine talking to
the world. (Young and old).
* Morse ! Yep Morse code really gets 'em. The public seem to hold
fascination for this mode when they see it in real use.
* The intrigue of strangled SSB audio, the snap, crackle and pop
mixed in with signals from across the world. Yep - QRN, QSB and odd
audio appears to add to the intrigue of it all.
I've found it difficult to impress anyone with datacomms or easy QSO's
via Echolink, it just seems to leave them cold.
The common threads here seem to be:
The oddness to it.
The intrigue.
The vagueries of signals.
The homebuilt appearence of equipment.
As opposed to the _ease_ of anything.
Weird eh ?
The other thing to consider is that I actually try to be as discreet as
possible when operating at the beach, and yet visitors still turn up.
Teachers, ex WW2 services personnel,magistrates, farmers,fisherman and
some youngsters are among my "visitors". Notice how most of them are
of a more mature demographic ?
5 year old on old farts knees holding microphones doesn't work.
