Hi. Does anyone know what the DVD-RAM "type" numbers are?
I have two disks. One says "Type 1" and it cannot be removed from the
cartridge (I can't see why you'd want to do that anyway), and this disk is
double-sided. The other is single-sided and says "type 2", and it can be
removed from the cartridge. Appariently there is a "Type 4" because my DVD
recorder manual recommends using that type, so presumably there is also a
"type 3"? There was also some mention of copy-protected channels
(presumably on cable or Sky) which allow once-only copy, but only onto some
types of disk. I don't have CATV or Sky but do have Freeview and some
channels say "encrypted" even though they are free. However, I can record
onto either of these disks from these channels and even onto DVR-R (which
it says you can't if it's a protected channel), so perhaps this only
applies to subscription channels or only on cable and Sky? I even tried
copying onto VHS, and this was allowed, so even if it is some kind of SCMS
then it's not being used on Freeview (maybe on TopUp?)
I've only had the machine a couple of days and I'm still learning how to
use all the features on it. I'm pretty impressed with this ability to
simultaneously record and play back, either by starting to play a recording
not yet completed, or a different recording altogether, or even having a
recording start and stop while you are playing something else (all assuming
on the same disk of course!) I thought this sort of trickery was only
available on HDD recorders. Mind you, it does worry me that the lens
carriage must be zooming back and fourth quite a lot to read bits of the
playback program and then write bits of the recording. As the machine also
has a VHS deck, this means that I could record two programs while playing
back a third - you can even keep an eye on what's being recorded on a
quarter-size picture-in-picture if you want! I was recording the diving on
the Olympics Saturday night, and Dad who was watching said "Did you see
that?". I didn't as I was looking elsewhere, but no problem, it was
recording but I could just hit "play" and replay it, while it went on
recording! Try doing "that" with VHS!
