Marlene Dietrich emigrated to the US in the 1930s and made a big thing out
of saying how much she hated Hitler. Nonethe less she did pretty well with
her song 'Lili Marlene' being popular on both sides during WWII.

After WWII she was one of the people, along with Susan Sonntag who made
strong criticisms of the producer, Leni Riefenstahl. Perhaps it was
jealousy. As I said Leni produced films for Hitler and it was rumoured
they were good friends but Leni always denied it and said she was just
doing a job.

The most famous job she did was the propaganda film, Triomph Des Willens,
which was brilliantly made and even introduced new techniques like
travelling cameras on rails alongside the action, still used to this day
and certain tricks involving filters.

I can well understan if you have never heard of her cansidering who runs
Hollywood. I'm pretty sure she can be found on the internet.

As for Lili von Stupp, that is a bit over the top by British standards
which makes it boring but that is typical of Mel Brooks films. My
favourite bit is the cowboy supper time scene but, then I always did have
a crude sense of humour.
