Well I have never met Dick Smith personally but I do know something about
him, and not through business dealings with him - partly through another
organization not allied to business.
He may be a millionaire but that is by his own efforts I might say. He
made his money initially by importing amateur and electronic goods and
selling at prices well below those charged by the big importing firms. The
amateurs of the day flocked to his shops and got all sorts of ham gear at
never before heard of prices.
I would also like to point out that here is a millionaire that does
something good with his money. He is a philanthropist and he spreads his
money around where it will do the most good. Can't say that of most
millionaires. I am told he is also a good churchman so it seems he
practises what he preaches.
He has had no connection with the firm for many years. I think he is
occupied in publishing of the Australian National Geographic magazine.
No, his callsign was,and still is as far as I know, VK2DIK
I have changed the title as this subject has nothing to do with deserts!
