Hello All.
I try to keep clear of political comments, personal abuse, and generally
unfriendly bulletins, although I read them to sense the current attitudes
on packet radio. Maybe I'm missing something by not using other modes?
But I would like to comment on the recent subject of Dick Smith, VK2DIK.
As some have said, DS did start in car radio repairs, and then expanded
into electronics and eventually, nation wide electrical-electronic sales.
He started from 'scratch' as they say of many successful business people,
and became a well know name, and image, in Australia, New Zealand, and for
a short time, the USA. Some years ago, he disposed of his involvement in
Dick Smith Electronics, and started the 'Australian Geographic', a magazine
along the lines of the American 'National Geographic'.
Many episopdes in between made him an outstanding Australian entrepreneur.
Flying solo in his own helicopter around the world, over the poles, and
ballooning across the continent are examples of his adventurous nature.
He was voted Australian Of The Year about 5 years ago, and is in my opinion,
an outstanding example of an Australian achiever and role model for anyone
with similar ability. Someone who stands out in a world where 'pop stars',
actors and sportsmen, seem to attract the attention of the media and children.
Yes, I am a fan of Dick Smith, and it is most unfair to attempt to belittle
his name with, often, uninformed comments. Just to make it more unpleasant
for the knockers, I also admire Bill Gates, who gets a bad press and many
snide remarks for being an achiever. Both men have been outstandingly
successful, and are now putting part of their earnings into worthy causes.
The world today is eating it's self with cannibalistic critisism and hatred.
We are becoming desparately short of Dick Smiths' for the future.
