ISS Talks to Briar Hill
-----------------------
A packed school room at the Briar Hill Primary School in Melbourne's
north-east experienced what it is like to talk to an astronaut onboard
the International Space Station.

Veteran at talking to school groups, astronaut William McArthur KC5ACR
who has made more than 35 such contacts, fielded questions from the
school students during a seven minute pass.

Organised by the North East Radio Group it was set up through the now
standard practice of a tele-bridge via Tony Hutchison VK5ZAI in Kingston,
South Australia.

It was a nervous time for the NERG members running the show up until about
five minutes before the scheduled 8.02pm (AEDT) Friday 31 March contact
with feed-back and low audio, but it was fully resolved in time.

School principal Natalie Will made a brief speech before each of the
students progressed passed the microphone with a total of 22 questions
being asked.

The students and a crowd of 110 listened intently at William KC5ACR
replied to a broad range of issues from life in space through to what a
didgeridoo sound like in space. On that last question the answer is it
sounds no different than when played on earth.

In the audience was Banyule City Mayor, Cr Wayne Phillips who described it
as "fantastic" and added "I didn't know what to expect. The questions by the
students were very interesting, they had been well behaved, and it was great
for Briar Hill."

Well done to NERG, with its long planning for this event, briefings to
students and rehearsals of them all creating a highly successful and
memorable Amateur Radio International Space Station event.
