The Reserve Bank has announced that the NZ coinage is to be made smaller
and cheaper, and the 5 cent coin will be removed altogether. This will
make the 10 cent coin the smallest denomination.
The new coins will be considerably smaller, the 10c coin becoming the
size of the present 5c coin, the 20c coin becoming the size of the 10c
one, and the 50c coin shrinking to the size of a 20c coin.
Now the silly part is the new coins will be made of plated steel. We all
know that plating chips off quite easily, exposing the bare steel
underneath to water. I think that before long our coins will be rusty
and potentially harmful to handle.
What will international tourists think when they hand over their shiny
Brass Razoos (or whatever currency they carry) at a money changer only
to be handed in return a handful of rusty circles, which don't appear to
have any value at all!
These cost-cutting measures will save the Bank $2million per year.
Does any other country use steel coins? I would be interested to find
out.
Seventy-Three.
