I was interested to see that  OFCOM had suggested removing the licence  charge
and "deregulating" amateur radio.
There is  a limit  to how  far they  can go  with that as the ITU regs have to
complied with.

However it  did ring  bells here.  About three  years ago  ACA had a series of
meeting  around the  country where  amateurs were  invited to  come  and  make
commnets  on a  paper which  ACA had  previously  circulated  and  called  for
comments and this was a follow up on that excercise.

The probably most important point was that ACA was suggesting that the amateur
service be made a "Class Licence" with no licence fee. There would be exams to
comply with the ITU regs but almost to  a man we looked the gift horse in  the
mouth and didn't like what we saw.

The CB  service is  a Class  Licence here  as are  such things  as garage door
openers, Low Interference Potential Devices, etc etc.
We could see  that if we  didn't pay a  fee we would get the same interference
protection that those class licence services get, ie none.

So the result is we no significant change in our status.
