I must be thinking of something else -- I remember at one point downloading
hundreds of files that took up many MB on the hard drive, just to get
weather watches and warnings. Maybe this is what was in use before we all
went to the shapefiles???

Not sure about the other APRS programs, but Xastir uses Shapefile maps from
NOAA, and there are only 6 or 8 files to download to get them all. Each
archive will explode into 3 or more files. As far as I know there have
never been hundreds of files to download in order to get the weather alerts
on your screen.

These files do represent thousands of different areas that can be lit up,
but there are hundreds of them in each Shapefile set.

General note of warning. UPS's are designed sometimes cheaply to use
battery capacity to limit the amount of time and heat that the transformer
can handle. When you upsize the battery, you may wind up melting the
transformer or a fire. My suggestion is get one that has a fan inside to
cool the transformer like some of the larger size more "data center" types.
Typically rack mountable uints will have this type of design.

I'm guessing that your post was in response to the pics of my modified UPS.
The UPS is designed for backing up a server. There is another model, that
is just like this one, that is designed to add up to 10 additonal external
batteries. On that model the plug (with the yellow cable) that you see in
the third picture is used to connect the addtional batteries. Now on this
model the plug is used as a battery disconnect.

My greatest concern was having enough ventilation. After installing it
yesterday, I feel more comfortable that there is plenty of ventilation. I
am also concerned about the load. Right now I have it backing up
everything, but I may put the radios on their own 12 volt battery backup.

The shapefiles do occupy about 40MB when unpacked, but you only download
a set of three ZIP file archives to cover the entire country. The links
I cited in my previous post go directly to the three files required.
The same shapefile set works with UIview, APRSplus, Win/MacAPRS and
Xastir.

This isn't related to the recent HRO thing, but it reminded me of something
else...

Has everyone else gotten as many of these spam messages titled
'Radio-Amateurs+ART' as I have? It's been going on for months. The
messages are apparenty from ON4AW, always sent from a different domain but
most recently from mariaacke_at_misbuscadores.com. I've responded every
time asking for removal, and finally got a response - claiming that they've
had 175,000 positive responses and that I should just ignore the message or
remove my email from the internet (hah!) if I didn't want to see it again.

The message itself is in poorly-written English and links to Dutch-language
sites with some pictures of old rigs and text on art history. Certainly
nothing that warrants mass, unsolicited emails. I can only assume that
it's an attempt to drive traffic to the sites, so I won't include the URLs
here.

If everyone else is as fed up with this joker as I am, email them and let
them know!

Scott
