Hi Rod,
The latest version of HamHUD II firmware supports the Kenwood D700/D7a, but
only in TNC mode. Kenwood made a bad design decision that prevents front
panel APRS operation when the TNC mode is engaged. Anyway, you would be
able to do SmartBeaconing with a D700, and you'd have the HamHUD II display
for packet display and messaging.
HamHUD II PC boards are still available, and a new device, HamHUD V, is in
development.

I'm sure this equates to a "Ford v/s Chevy" Question, but what's the best
APRS Program out there?
And WHY??

For what OS? Best answer is to look at the chart.
and decide which features you need.

Rod,
Where there's a will...
Another idea FWIW. Would probably require an additional 555 timer, but...
The top row of buttons on the D700 Mic are hardware inputs to the radio.
I use the one set to BCON to force a skwawk when I want. The radio skwawks
when BCON is first turned on. The TT could be interfaced there also. The
correct resistor value is needed. Set one of these mic buttons to the BCON
function ( I don't recall if that is one of the defaults or a custom
setting), then have the TT turn on BCON when it needs to skwawk -- then
shortly after, turn it off (the 555's job). 73, Steve, K9DCI

Depends on what YOU want to do and which OS.
I run xastir (for Igate) and DigiNed (cross-port digi) on the linux
machine, and for convenience I use UIView on the Windows machine. I don't
know if those programs are *best* for their respective tasks but they work
for me.
Horses for courses.

OK, I scrolled down the page that Bill referenced and found those pictures
but I guess I was expecting more! Especially from Billy Bob.
Now I have been playing with Google Earth since it now has a tie-in with
the Garmin MapSource program. If you have not played with that feature of
MapSource, you are missing it. It actually plots all your way points and
tracks from your GPS or any saved file on the Google Earth maps. Now you
can view your tracks in 3D, tilt it rotated it, zoom in on it, etc. Pretty
neat stuff. I have already spent hours and hours viewing my bushwhacking
hiking trips in the Olympic Mountains and am now finally able to get a real
perspective of where I go and what is on the other side of that ridge or
cliff. You will need one of the Garmin last updates to MapSource in order
to play with this feature. I use the latest Beta Version 6.12.
I also clicked on Bre's URL below. Now that zoomed me right in on the
balloon track on a Google Earth map and I can view it in 3D. Again neat
stuff. Now I noticed that this map also shows my last file (Waypoints and
Tracks) that I viewed in MapSource (must be from a file on my computer).
So I really have my GPS data along with the APRS Balloon data on this
Google Earth map.
Now for the punch line, has anyone worked on getting the live APRS data to
show up on a current Google Earth map? This sure would be the cat's meow
of playing APRS even though you need a high speed internet feed to play
with it. Sure would be a neat feature though.
So, is such a feature available yet on the NET? If not, is anyone working
on such a feature or APRS program? Bill, are you listening? Hi, hi....
You know me, I am just a user and not smart enough to develop such an
interface but boy would it be a nice interface/feature addition to APRS.

Yep. Aprskml does that now. I also wrote my own ASP.Net interface, but
it's still pretty rough and the parser is offline at the moment. There are
some quirks, though. Every time the objects refresh, it acts like the
object you were looking at was destroyed. Makes it hard to get data out of
a pop-up balloon if there's any sort of rapid refresh rate.

Subject: [aprssig] Short Ranges
When I first set up APRS+SA and then connected to the internet with it,
I used to get APRS stations that showed up world wide. Now I seen to
only see stations within 500 miles. This was true in California, and it
is now true in Texas. I do not knowingly have on a range filter. What is
going on?
