Subject: [aprssig] Station Icon Problem

On some of the stations I receive packets from the station direction icon
(arrow) will point the reverse of a known stations location. Is there a
setting not correctly set in my radio to correct this or is the GPS data
coming from the other aprs station not correct.

I have seen this occur from different stations, but not all are incorrect.

Thanks

Jon

Subject: [aprssig] APRS Text to speech

The ANDE and RAFT satellites add APRS Packet-to-VOICE synthesis by simply
connecting a speech module to the serial port of the TNC and making one
addition to convert the HEADER of a packet into "CALLSIGN SAYS..." and then
speaks the rest of the packet.

We all know how hard it is to set up a VOICE repeater out in the field,
compared to how easy it is to set up a DIGIpeater. AND a DIGI can go
multiple hops.

Imagine plopping down 2 coffee-can digi's on hilltops and then being able
to use APRS to send VOICE to an RF area 3 links away. Trivial done.

Yes, the applications are small, but it is a nice thing to have in your
tool kit. Well, the reason we have not pushed this is that the module we
were using cost $199 and hams just wont pay that much. But I just found
out that PARALLAX sells a complete module for only $59.

http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=30006

This is much more like it.

Remember, that since 1995, APRS has defined a test-to-speech protocol. If
any string in any APRS packet begins with a %, then the client (if it has a
voice) is supposed to speak that part of the packet.

The D700's will SPEAK such packets, (but it has a very very limited
vocabulary, and few people have the speech module. But APRSdos had no
voice, but would sound out the words in CW. WinAPRS would speak it. I
assume that other clints will also speak too.

But with the addition of a $59 moudle to any TNC, you can now have voice in
a remote box without having to have a client.

Anyway, we need to think about how we do this. A pic could do to old TNC's
what the KPC-3+ in ANDE and RAFT do. That is, convert the header to
speech. Etc...

Anyone?

A friend of mine was in an accident the other day (he's okay).
Unfortunately, the facts of the accident are in dispute. He has a D700 in
the car and was beaconing positions on APRS at the time. Are there any
other resources out there that would have archived (with timestamp)
position reports that he could possibly use to prove his case?

Thanks!

Not sure, but try to use this link:

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=aj3u-1&terra=4

and change the AJ3U-1 to his APRS call sign,

Thanks for the reply. That is okay for the last packet received, but I
need something from two days ago when the accident occurred.

APRS World will give you a list of packets sent by a callsign. It'll take
some digging to find it but hopefully that'll have the info you need.

Does it spell words that are in all caps? for example... is AI4PX spelled a
i 4 p x or is it pronounced ayyyyy four picks.

On a humorous note... my wife gets really irritated listening to my "frogger
beep" d700 esp in an active area, I can well imagine this device reading off
all packets would make a road trip with her that much more enjoyable. Kinda
like the time I set the overspeed alarm on the GPS to 72mph when she was
driving. ;-)

You could run the findu log converter in UI-View. It retrieves the data
from findu.com and saves it in a log file which can be played back in
UI-View. The data may or may not be accepted in court, but it certainly
can't hurt to get the data and have it ready. At face value, it would
indicate position, speed, and direction of travel for every log entry.
What's your friend's callsign-SSID?

Reminds me of the time years ago when I came around a corner and ploughed
into a car that was parked on the driven portion of the road. With oncoming
traffic, I couldn't go around him, so I opted to steer into the snow bank.
This slowed me down pretty quick, but I still hit the parked car. He
claimed that I was speeding and had passed him about 50 km earlier. If I
had passed him, I would have been in front of him! As well, as parking just
past a curve in the road, he said his reason for stopping was to put on a
football helmet and take some cold medication. The other guy got 100% of
the blame, but it would have been nice to have had APRS back then to see if
the "black box" would be accepted to prove that I wasn't speeding though.

Try this one, except substitute the call sign

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/posit.cgi?call=n0vlx-7&start=0&length=48&time=1
&comma=1

For more details see http://www.findu.com/cgi.html scroll down and find the
posit.cgi command

APRS World did the trick. Thanks!

For those interested, here is the link:
