Could a TinyTrak or other device with SmartBeaconing be harnessed to one of
the Kenwood rigs in the PTT mode of Beacon Transmit Method so that a
Kenwood's beaconing would be under the control of SmartBeaconing. I wonder
what would be done with the data from the TT as that would already be
available from the Kenwood? Could the GPS signal be split between the two
radios? I presume this idea has been considered and discarded but I would
like to know more details, if available, Thanks,73 de Rod.

Not practically, unless you want to dedicate both sides of the D700 to
APRS. Both the mic input and the audio input on the mini-DIN connector are
on the band currently selected (the one flagged "PTT" on the display).

Another way to accomplish this is to use a dedicted microcontroller than
takes the GPS input and tells the d700 when to beacon vis the d700's
(non-GPS) rs232 port.

>Could the GPS signal be split between the two radios?

Yep. Practically, just tap the TXdata line from the GPS. To obey the
rs232 spec you'll need to play some games since 232 specifies a single
receiver, but in general it'll work OK without that (in my limited
experience).

I have a p166 I am thinking of pressing into APRS Service. Who has
experience with this program?

Unless you can scare up an at-least 6-years-old out-of-print older
version of Delorme Street Atlas, you won't be able to do any mapping.

The ONLY mapping application that works with APRSplus is the old-style
"classic" version of Street Atlas ending with version 9 in 2001.

APRSplus DOES NOT work with the current new-style Delorme Products
including Street Atlas and TopoUSA.

If you only want to use APRSplus as an igate or messaging client it will
work on a P166.

APRS+SA will also work with bitmap files for maps like most other APRS
programs.

Basically you would have to save a map image, any map image, and calibrate
the corner coordinates for that image.

The functionality is severely limited in the bit map fixed-image mode.
It seems to crash frequently if you use oversized images, and then zoom
in and out or scroll to see various parts of the map. Further, any
time you zoom, scroll, select a new map or switch to a new window and
then return, all existing symbols are lost. You have to wait for each
station's next transmission before you will see them again. The only
thing I have ever used it for is for a fixed view of the entire US for
HF 30M operating. Otherwise, I don't really consider it very useful.
