While it's a neat idea..... packet audio is muted for use with voice alert.
Also, you forfeit the smart beaconing of the T2. Not that either of these
are deal breakers.... You know, sometimes when I plug my d700 in, it comes
on, and other times it does not... something in the PM modes, but I'm just
not sure what. Sure would be nice if the T2 power switch option would auto
turn on my d700 at the power jack as soon as my GPS gets a fix.

Is there somewhere that describes the computer logic behind these concepts?
I've heard people mention them, and would simply like to understand them
more. Thank you!

There is smart beaconing which sends packets at ideal positions and changes
to give a smoother track, and higher rate when maneuvering. But there is
also the newer concept of Proportional Pathing which maintains a high rate
DIRECT and local, while reducing the rate farther away, actually reducing
the load on the network.
And proportional pathing is independent of user settings, making it much
less vulnerable to user mistakes which seems to be the biggest problems
with users and paths and tracker settings.
SO there are two schools of opinion... I think Proportional Pathing has a
lot to offer. Here is the link to Proportional Pathing:

You will of course be aware that the highly dense populated areas with high
terrain walls that your have especially in California, have a _much_ larger
APRS user density and a _very_ different topography than most areas in
Europe; mountain top digipeaters covering areas with several million
inhabitants aren't there. Also, Europe are several independent nations with
independent amateur radio associations and different radio frequency
legislations (we have - for all practical purposes - one band plan,
though).
I have said previously - and am still saying - that there should be an
agreement, preferrably through the IARU region 1, about the parameters in
this area, rather than groups of digipeater owners doing one solution and
other groups or individuals in the neighbouring areas doing another
solution, making up a mess for travelling APRSers inside each country or
crossing international borders. Unlike north America, we europeans can
cross almost any international border inside Europe with car or
walking/bicycling without even stopping for any customs or passport
control, so the need for _one_ system is there; the openness to get to a
mutual agreement, howeveer, isn't. Each party has a religious belief in
their own system; RELAY,TRACEn-N, RELAY,WIDEn-N (traceable or not), the US
WIDE1-1,WIDEn-N (these are for mobiles/portables).

The Smartbeaconing(tm) and corner pegging algorithms are described in detail
on the HamHud site:

I'll have to admit I've never bothered with voice alert.

Mine is consistent: it never does.
I put together a little microcontroller circuit that sends the magic string
for powering on to the D700 serial port. I also use the APO2 to manage
power to the D700 and GPS.
My list of things to do includes building a new circuit that watches
vehicle power and turns the D700 off and on as appropriate. I may not get
to that one for a while, since what I have now works. (:

Subject: RE: [aprssig] Need GPS for D700
Hi Chris..
Any GPS that can spit out NMEA data over RS232 serial, will work with the
D700, D7, Ui-View, Xastir etc...
Anything that only has a USB interface, will never work on it's own, you'll
need another PC to interface between RS232 and USB, as it needs to work as
a USB "Host" not as the common USB<>RS232 adapters do, as they are
"Devices".
No one yet (to my knowledge at least) makes one that works, by hosting a
"modern" USB device, and then spitting out "Legacy" RS232 data.
USB only GPS's can be made to work with Ui-View/Xastir etc, but only if
they come with, or will work with other software that creates a virtual
serial port for the users program to use.
Again, any RS232 capable GPS that output's true NMEA data will work with a
radio on it's own. The basic yellow eTrex for example, works well, I have
one. But don't buy the expensive Garmin power/data cable, look up any of
the third party suppliers..
http://www.pfranc.com/cables/index.shtml for example.
