It's not clear from the picture or specs:
1. Is the GPS a mag mount or loose?
2. What is the power source? Cig lighter? bare wires? powered thru USB?

It has little rubber feet and a fairly powerful magnet glued into the
plastic base. (mine is a slightly older case style, but I believe it
is still the same)

Powered through USB. I know it sound too good to be true, but it really
is a fully functional $33 GPS mouse!

Ok folks - I hope I don't get flamed for this. The question has probably
been asked many times before.
I just purchased a D700 and love it. Now I want to connect a GPS unit to
show my position. I called the local candy store about a Garmin eTrex. I
thought it might be a good start. The guy said it won't work with the D700?
I know a couple of other guys that are using them. However, maybe they are
older units? I'm not sure?
Does anyone have any ideas? Any suggestions would be appreciated. If you do
not want to tie up the reflector - please e-mail me directly:

The regular eTrex will work just fine. Some of the higher-end eTrex models
do not have a serial connection. They have a USB connection. They will
probably not work. I have the plain yellow eTrex and it works fine with my
TH-D7A(G). It should also work with the D700.

Ditto for me as well, I am also running a Garmin etrex on my D7 and it
works great. I would be willing to bet any GPS that is capable of
outputting raw NMEA data in serial format would work, but not sure.

The GPS MUST have a serial connection.
The GPS MUST have at least NMEA out.
Seems simple. Well here are a few curve balls. I just connected a Garmin
Foretrex to my TH-D7AG. The manual said it only has NMEA out. Wrong, it
has NMEA in too as it does display the location of APRS stations.
I know the older eTrax units have a serial connection. OTOH, their
receiver is quite weak and might not work well even on the dashboard of
your vehicle.
Now I've heard a lot of good about the Garmin 18 PC (NOT the USB
version). No display, mag mounted and has cigarette lighter power cord
and serial cord.
Or get something more expensive like the Garmin 60Cx and let it do your
road navigation too. This is a really superb unit, but if used for APRS
only, this is quite an overkill.

I'm using a gpsmap276c and despite a few firmware upgrade glitches, it works
great. Garmin has come thru for me each time I've found a boo boo in the
unit. It's hard to find a street mapping / auto routing unit that still has
a serial port... this one does. Super fast screen redraws each time the
d700 sends serial data.

Adding to what the others have said: I have been using an eTrex Vista with
the TH-D7 for quite a few years, now with a TM-D700. No trouble. With NMEA
out AND in (as in my eTrex), you'll also see stations received by your
TM-D700 as waypoints on the GPS display. I have previously been using
GPSMAP76 and the older unit GPS45xl occasionally in my car, all showing
other fixed and moving APRS stations as waypoints on the map (or the
map-like screen on the 45).

I have a friend who is in Indonesia. He is a ham radio operator. He and
other hams are helping with relief efforts for the recent floods. He needs
to setup an APRS digipeater. He has a Kantronics KPC 9612 (non-Plus
version) with the original firmware. He needs the updated firmware so that
the TNC will work as a digipeater.
I know that at one time there were some members of this list that would burn
an EEPROM for the KPC-3, with updated firmware, if they were sent a chip.
If I get a chip, for a KPC-9612, is there someone on this list that I can
send it to for upgrading?

The New-N Paradigm Works!
Today's APRS stats in Maryland, 39N/76.5W at 80' HAAT:
* 241 total Heard RF-only at least once in last 24 hrs
* 66 fixed (1 +SA, 3 DOS, 8 WIN, 54 UI)
* 45 Digis (1 Trace, 3 Paccom, 4-L, 5-N, 32-S)
* 20 WX stations
* 104 Mobiles
* 85 D700
* 7 D7's
* 6 Mic-E trackers
* 3 trackers (other)
* 2 NMEA
* 1 Uiview mobile
Yet with 80' HAAT antenna, 144.39 is quiet typically 70 % of the time (at
10 AM after rush hour). Compared to before the New-N Paradigm which was
wall-to-wall packets. With this much quiet,reliability is up for local
users. The biggest load are 2 trackers that seem to be hitting near 90
packets per hour (using smart beaconing, I think).
My RF-only range area appears to be about 120 miles but my ALOHA circle is
about 60 miles average, but shrinks to about 45 miles during morning rush
hour with many of the mobiles active. In that 45 mile ALOHA area (1030
AM), there were 115 total ACTIVE stations, only 11 active mobiles, 11
digis, and 4 wx stations.
PATHS look pretty good too (New-N does work)!
1% still trying to use RELAY (most won't get to me)
8% still trying to use WIDE (ditto)
13% using W3-3
71% using W2-2
22% using W1-1
These days, I mostly only monitor APRS while mobile with my D700. I see
over 90% of the mobiles in this area are also able to -see- APRS around
them too with APRS displays. That is why I think it is so important to get
those recommended travelers voice repeater objects on the air, to serve
those mobile travelers.

APRS is to serve mobiles and provide relevant local info to travelers as
well as provide comms. During this same 24 hours I saw only 3 user
messages, some WX bulletins and some DX queries and responses, but not much
human interaction. Maybe more people need the D700 external Keyboard
interface by W2FS to make typing easier in the mobile (while stopped).
Voice-alert is also a great hands-free means of communicating between
mobiles.
