We use Dell at work and they can be ordered with at least one serial port.
Another alternative is the PCMCIA serial card from Socket I/O and others
that provide a true serial port.

Came across this old European map of digi standards:

http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprs/New-Eu-map.GIF

It is supposed to show what areas hav standardized on what paths.. Does it
need upgrading?

I just got a new D620 as well. There is a parallel port on the docking
station, and I'm told that isn't a very expensive option at purchase time.

It does.
It is wrong.
Denmark is brown R,Tn (and has always been)
Norway is a mix (some are insisting on W1,Wn, some are insisting on
R,Tn, some do R,W and so just as before) - hence Red. Polish amateurs
have reported W1,Wn but it might be just as most of Europe: Red.

Bob -

Have no fear; no problems with the KEYSPAN USB to serial adapter. In fact,
the come with a serial assistant utility that let's you reassign the Com
Port #.

The Winlink Airmail program was finicky as I recall it only accepted COM 1 -
4. The above USB adapters are fine. DO NOT USE BELKIN!!!

Seems ok for Norway. But its stil a problem with people using older setup.
And theres no agreement on using the new-WideN-N

And its a little difficult to "learn" people when your statement:

1) Ask ALL users to stop using WIDEn-N and start using TRACEn-N.
---- OR -----
2) Simply swap the names WIDEn-N and TRACEn-N at the digis and let users
keep operating as before with the simple path of WIDEn-N.

Why? Because UI-View users probably is following M0CYP recomandations on
using TRACEn-N
http://www.apritch.myby.co.uk/uiview_neweu.htm as this is a link from
http://www.ui-view.org/

It would be better to explain that if more than 60% of european is using
some sort of WIDE or WIDEn-N its easier to adapt to the new-WideN-N rather
than TRACEn-N

So the "easy swap" is the hardest ;o)

If every country is going for one standard then it should not be a
problem(localy), but visitors have to change their setup.

I think the purpose is to display the recomandations and not the actual
configurations??
If not then it should be red :o(

Depends on how much laptop you require.

Fry's has some with serial ports with the store brand.
I have a Great Quality MX 3203 with a serial port.
I got it for ham radio use because of the serial port.
Has 4 usb ports, Lan, Modem, No A drive.
Has CD burner.

Probably, neither of this solutions is viable for Bob since he is still
trying to run DOS applications from DOS.

USB devices simply don't exist at DOS since they are dependent on
Windows-based drivers for their operation. [Except for some removable
USB mass storage devices like flash drives and ext HDDs that SOME modern
motherboard BIOSes make appear as virtual hard drives to DOS.]

While there are drivers for PCMCIA serial ports (or at least used to
be!) for DOS, the bulky multi-layer driver stacks often resulted in "RAM
CRAM" problems in the limited DOS memory space of only 1MB. By the
time, you loaded a mouse driver, and a two-layer CD-ROM driver, and the
PC-Card manager and the actual PCcard serial port driver you had
consumed too much RAM to allow the main app to run.
