I will give that a try. I am just starting with APRS, so this is all new to
me. Will I still need a TNC or just the APRS software and GPS?

My favorite story in this regard involves the starter motor for the genset
being hooked up to city power. This happens more often than one might
think. It will start the genset just fine during the weekly test, but...

You just need APRS software, a GPS and an Internet connection.

Something to keep in mind though is that you will want to connect to a
limited port on the server that you choose. Picking port 23 or 10152 is
too much for your card to handle.
Check out http://second.aprs.net:14501/ for details on some other port
options that you may wish to consider.
If all your trying to do is post your position, I would chose port 14580
with a filter of m/50 (the 50 can be any range, read the details on the
filter for more info)...

Or in the case of a high-bandwidth EV-DO card, you risk incurring the wrath
of your service provider. Verizon's 'unlimited' plan is anything but, as we
discovered the hard way.
We've got a remote telemetry site (a test system for some homeland security
stuff) running on one of these, piping in quite a bit of stuff to our data
center. Enough that we exceeded Verizon's secret (5 GB?) usage limit. This
results in a nasty form letter accusing the account holder of illegally
downloading movies and music - though in our case all of the traffic was
3DES-encrypted and there's no way they could tell what we were sending. And
of course it was only going to one destination, but they obviously weren't
looking at anything aside from the bandwidth usage.
In our case, the letter went to our corporate office, where someone assumed
it was a bill and set it aside for a couple of weeks. When someone finally
opened it, there were only three days remaining before the shut-off date.
By the time they notified our office, it was only one day. Getting through
to someone at Verizon with the authority to override the decision in a
timely manner proved impossible. They shut off service to the card, and we
had to jump through more hoops to get it turned back on. And that wasn't
the end of it - apparently their system requires that the card be in its
home (billed) area code the first time it's used. The site is a 5-hour
drive from here, so it took 20 hours of driving to get it back on the air.
And it's not just us - see the second item down at
http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20060928.html.

...and John N5PDW had previously responded "Just use your APRS client
software and configure it to connect to an APRS server."
If you don't already have an APRS client, you could take a look at UI-View
www.ui-view.org. You can connect to the APRS-IS and send your own position
reports etc. and view other stations around you that have made it to an
IGate. You can receive data for your own vicinity or from further afield if
your cell modem has enough bandwidth. This is done by connecting to a
filtered port 14580 server - all easily set up in UI-View. You don't need a
TNC, radio or GPS for this. You can manually enter your lat/long. That will
get you started. However, sooner or later, you will probably want to add a
TNC (or software based TNC) but you don't need it to get started.
re GPS... if you are actually mobile, a GPS would automatically keep your
position updated, but you can still enter a position manually if you want
the rest of the world to know where you are. The GPS just makes it more
automatic.

At a county sherrif's station I worked on, the 220 VAC AC input for the
battery charger for the station UPS was connected across the 220 VAC OUTPUT
of the UPS. (Perpetual motion, sort of....)

Subject: [aprssig] Sigh...
I'm sure this post will be followed up with one explaining what a moron I
am, but there appears to be a problem with at least weather data fed into
arizona.aprs2.net. A number of people have complained today that their wx
data stopped appearing on findU, all were successfully connected to
arizona.aprs2.net and receiving no errors. Investigating, I find that
arizona is connected to tier 2 core, and that is connected to the real core
(as they have designed their system this appears correct), but the weather
packets are not being forwarded. Three of these people switched to using
rotate.aprs.net and had the problem disappear.
I am unable to investigate further, the findU stream test feature
(http://www.findu.com/stream/) is unable to query arizona.aprs2.net as
apparently all unfiltered ports have been blocked. I cannot tell if this
just weather data from arizona.aprs2.net missing, all arizona.aprs2.net
data missing, data from all the T2 servers, or some other subset of data
missing.
Hopefully the T2 guys will find and correct the problem soon, in the
interim if you are using Tier 2 and find any data missing on findU, please
try connecting directly to the core (rotate.aprs.net) before you email me
about problems with findU.
Thanks you.
