The Tier 2 network is operating correctly. arizona.aprs2.net is operating
correctly and can easily be checked by accessing the status page or doing a
filtered connection. The server software supporting port 23 (the CWOP wx
port) on arizona.aprs2.net failed a little after 1430z this morning and
_ceased_ accepting connections. If the clients trying to connect are
reporting no errors, then the client software needs to be investigated as
to a failure to connect is not reported as an error. In other words, the
packets are not being forwarded because a connection to the server is never
being established.
Steve, if you are unable to contact the respective server sysop directly in
the future, feel free to contact me directly and I will help you analyze
the problem.

The weather server at arizona.aprs2.net is hung up. Dick is aware of the
problem and will reset it shortly. Domain names have been redirected.
Users should not make any changes to their setups at this time.
Note that this has nothing to do with what server is connected to what, nor
does it have anything to do with findU. It's a simple matter of a server
crash. The other three weather servers (socal, indiana,
newengland.aprs2.net) are functioning properly.

Another interesting thing is Verizon's EV-DO service agreement specifically
prohibits the use of their EV-DO network for remote telemetry applications.
Why? Don't ask me. I had a similar application for work and was going to
use a Verizon EV-DO card until I read that. I doubt they would ever find
out, but I couldn't take the risk of having it shut down for that reason.

So it isn't javAPRSrvr answering connects on port 23?

Actually it accepted the connection, then about twenty seconds later would
issue a message "Ports Busy" or something similar, and closed the
connection.
So someone connecting to port 23 on AZ goes through this software, (I'm
guessing the local javAPRSrvr next), then a Tier 2 hub, the real core hub,
and finally to findU? Hmmm...

It still needs to be publicized, as I now do get a refused connection on
arizona.aprs2.net port 23. At least this will let those clients with
fallover try another server.
If people want to use Tier 2 that is their right, but I want them all to be
aware that the core is and always has been open for their use.
rotate.aprs.net is always going to be the most direct route to findU. If a
user's goal is to get to my system, the core offers the shortest route. You
can argue all you want about the superiority of the Tier 2 design (and I'm
sure you will), but it is common sense that the fewer middlemen something
passes through the less chance there is for something to go wrong. This
event proves it.
To the SIG, don't worry, this is my last posting on the subject, so one
more from Pete and will be through. Let's see if we can make it through
this without a personal attack...

The first release of the AVRS system is now online and ready for those
interested....

Details on Bob's initial concept of AVRS can be found at:

Mr. Bruninga and I are in dialogue about the ongoing development of AVRS
so I'm sure we will be pushing on towards the full concept, however the
initial concept is completed and ready for your pleasure...
Please post any bugs at the APRSDEPOT site so we can track and squash
them. As of the sending of this message 67 requests have been made
through the AVRS system and none so far so.... *crossing fingers*
Much appreciated and happy AVRS'ing..

The WX server at aprswest.net has been fully restored. I'm on vacation and
didn't get the word until it had been down 9 hours. I should read my mail
more often. Anyway, it was restarted remotely and looks good.
It's true! All servers and internet connections fail from time to time. <g>
Sorry, for any inconvenience or personal grief.
Graph shows outage:

Stats by the hour:

As Steve mentioned, Tier 2 now has its own set of core servers. This was
done to provide reliable service within Tier 2. Currently, only 33 Tier 2
servers plus sub-servers are allowed to connect to these core units. The
reason we did this was to reduce the stress on the main 'legacy' core units
(FIRST, SECOND, THIRD.aprs.net).
Tier 2 is a true world-wide network with core 2 core units in the USA, 1 in
Ireland, and 1 in Japan. Out of the 33 T2 servers only 10 are located in
the USA. Tier 2 provides reliable connectivity for over 1000 APRS-IS
end-users around the world. Another estimated 2500 weather stations send
periodic WX reports via an additional 4 Tier 2 WX/CW servers.
The mission of the Tier 2 server network is to provide reliable access to
the APRS Internet Service for users around the world. The team is focused
to use the finest technology available and to create the infrastructure to
give you support for your most efficient use of the APRS-IS.
