How's everyone powering their GPS receiver when used with the TM-D700A?
Would have been nice if Kenwood had provided a 5 volt power output like
Alinco did, but oh well. I'm thinking about trying to come up with some
sort of simple adapter that wouldn't require a cigarette lighter socket or
anything.
You could get power from the mic connector (using a little inline 'T' to
split it), but a GPS and lighted microphone might be pushing the 200 mA
limit. Seems like the easiest way would be to have it tap in to the
radio's power connection, also using an inline splitter.
Any ideas? I'd like to get something going before Dayton next year. I
lost count of how many times I had to explain that the Deluo GPS receivers
couldn't connect directly to the D700 without some external source of
power.

I made up a 5 volt reg off the 12 volts to run my gps hocky puck.

Separate power line from the car's power for each item (well, that's my
way, probably not everyone's).

As it happens, I just installed a D700 with a Garmin GPS16 HVS in my wife's
car ( KC2PAK-1 ) this past weekend...
I've standardized on using Powerpoles for everything, so I just made up a
"Y" connector for the power cable from the engine compartment. One leg of
the Y adapter for the rig, the other for the GPS.
I'm using Copeland Engineering Power Tamers
( http://www.sirennet.com/ce5201.html ) for power control for my mobile
rigs, and they work wonderfully. No discernable RF noise or hash,
extremely low power draw when "off", and work perfectly well mounted right
next to the engine. Now, what I'd REALLY like is for someone to package
up something in the same sort of indestructable enclosure, with the same
features, and has 12V and 5V outputs. ;-)

Sounds like a feature request for the APO4 - how about it, Jim? =] It'd
probably still be cheaper than the Power Tamer.

Dont most radios these days come with a auto timer off.
What I do is run a second portable battery with 4 sockets on it ( 1 for GPS
the others for what you like) that is charged when the vehicle is running.
These units are used in Australia by our Paramedics

Auto power off is useful when you just have a radio to turn off, but not so
much when you have other equipment. ;-) ( Unless you happen to have a
radio that can feed other devices, of course.) But APO doesn't help when
you want everything to automatically turn on again, once the vehicle starts
up later.

I've always thought the EIAJ (Electronic Industies Assn Japan) blew it when
they defined the standard MiniDIN 6-pin packet/data connector by not
providing a pin for 12 VDC power for the gadgets that connected to this
jack.
I stuffed a tiny 1 watt Astrodyne 9-18VDC in/5 VDC out isolated switcher
inside my D700. (I soldered flying leads to the pins intended for PC
mounting on this 1/2" x 1" x1/4" package, and then encapsulated the whole
thing in a piece of heat shrink. I then connected the 5 VDC output to one
of the unused pins of the DB9 main serial connector.
Most of the serial-version mouse-type GPSes come with a male PS2 plug to
steal power from a laptop keyboard jack. On the mating DB9 plug, I have a
2" pigtail with an inline molded female PS2 connector coming out a notch
filed in the side of the DB9 backshell.
On other radios (without the serial port or aux connectors of some sort), I
have filed a notch in the case (or drilled a 1/8" hole through the back
panel) and have a similar PS2 pigtail 2" long dangling out the rear for
powering GPS devices. My approach is that the radio should always provide
the power for peripherals without having to have forked 12 VDC power cables
from the primary power source.
Note that in addition to the usual cigarette ligher plug with an internal
12->5 VDC switcher in it, Deluo also has an inline 12 to 5 converter with
flying leads (complete with inline fuse holder) for the 12V input and a PS2
jack for the 5VDC output for $20. Pics and details here:
http://www.deluoelectronics.com/customer/product.php?productid=14
This device could possibly be stuffed inside the larger radios (or
velcro'ed to the side of the case).

They're not the first ones to miss the boat. Of the standard 'legacy' PC
ports, I think only the keyboard/mouse connections had power. Look how
many silly USB-powered gadgets popped up once we actually got a peripheral
connection with power available.

Certainly preferred, but not practical for all users.

Well, shoot.. I never noticed that. I'll have to find out if I can get a
better deal from them as a reseller. Thanks for pointing that out.
