That's a good radio but you need a real TNC.

What OS?

This is a perfectly normal voltage variation for a so-called 12-volt system
when the engine is running. Typically the voltage will start out high just
after the engine is started (and the battery voltage is low). Then after
the initial charging rush, the voltage will drop somewhat. [Note that most
mobile transceiver power output specs for "12-volt-operated" radios are
quoted at 13.8 VDC since this is more typical of a mobile with the engine
running..]

A healthy 12 volt car battery will drop to something like 12.6-12.7 volts
after the engine is shut off for a few minutes.

If you are trying to sense engine-on-and-running vs engine-off-and-parked,
you need to set the voltage detect threshold at about 12.9 volts.

I seem to need a space between the "r" and the "P" for the THD7 to
recognise the object. Is this a bug/feature or me?

It drops below that threshold while running and under motion. That's why
I was wondering if anyone has delt with this before. Curious if it is
how Honda intended it to operate or if it needs attention.

anything below 13.0V you can bet the car isn't running. Also, I'd set the
"don't transmit below voltage" to 12.6. It usually takes about 5 or 6 days
for my wife's car to run that low.

You might want to check all of your ground straps. Weird electrical issues
are often a ground going bad somewhere in the vehicle.

Actually the biggest issue isn't with the software. It's with people that
have Digi's setup with wrong or missing PHG information. Would be nice if
software was more specific but it doesn't help when it's feed wrong data to
begin with. The vast majority of the Digi operators do it correctly but it
only takes a couple of miss configured PHG strings to really mess up a
display.

Subject: Re: [aprssig] Cheap USB GPS available again -- more detail

Ok, I cracked one open. Forgot to mention, these units have a magnet in
the bottom of the case.

It's about 1 3/8" square and a little over 1/4" thick (mostly antenna).

The chipset is the Prolific PL-6313 "GPS Baseband Processor". You can
usually download this from Prolific's website, but it's broken at the
moment.

There's a SiGe SE 4100L RF downconverter.

The USB interface is the PL-2303X. Same deal about the datasheet.
I found the 3.3V TTL serial on a via between the two chips.

The antenna seems to be secured only by one fat through hole, so you can
probably replace it with a vertical-mount SMA where it is with relative
ease. The antenna lead goes to a flea-sized cap so you could also pull
that and solder to the flea-sized trace or pad.

There's a little battery which is probably to back up the almanac for
fast restart. Another thing you might be able to remove to save weight.

Bottom of the unit says it draws 35mA. It does have a blinking LED
(1 blink/sec while locked) and of course the USB and USB pullup resistors
which might be removable.

I poked around looking for a locked frequency standard, but I'm sure it
will be much easier to find when the PL-6313 datasheet is back online.
