I'll probably try the SmartBeaconing on my next trip.

I really did think about it. Only had two objections. 1.) Didn't know the
_complete_ PHG data for the objects I was adding. 2.) Didn't like the way
the Voice Repeater Circles messed with the APRS Digipeater circles. You're
SUPPOSED to be able to view only one or the other in UI-View's PHG plug-in
but that ASSUMES that everybody has setup there PHG circles correctly. When
I _try_ to filter out the Voice Repeaters PHG circles I wind up filtering
out some of the APRS Digi's at the same time.

I went to Toronto and then to Niagara Falls just two weeks ago. I had good
tracks from Sarnia to Toronto back to Sarnia but not hardly anything while
in Niagara area. I went from MI to ON and back.

I have found a solution to my messaging issue.
I found I can use xastir as the HQ computer, and because messages sent to
xastir appear on the local port 2023, it makes it REALLY easy to then use
xastir to take care of the acks, and just use perl to grab data off

Scott, I think SmartBeaconing addresses part of the problem of automating
mobile trackers, but the automatic selection of different configurations
has the potential of opening up some other possibilities.
SmartBeaconing will slow down the beacon rate when the tracker stops, but
the tracker will still keep sending the same status text, correct? The
automatic config selection could automatically change the status text, but,
as Garren found out, if you automatically select configs based on tracker
speed, the tracker will change configs whenever you are stopped in traffic.
That wasn't what Garren wanted.
So, would it be possible to automatically select configs based on the
amount of time the tracker is in one of the selection parameters? For
instance, could Opentracker automatically select the other config if the
tracker was at 0 mph for 30 minutes?
This sort of decision making is common in my business, HVAC controls. If a
room pressure goes out of range for a few seconds, it's no big deal because
it probably means someone opened a door to enter the room. But if that room
pressure stays out of range for five minutes, then you have a problem and
an alarm needs to be set.

Ah thanks.
Yes, the displayed PHG circles for objects such as repeaters should be A
different color and/or separately displayed from other stations. But I can
see Your point if the software you are using is that limited.
Thanks, Bob

That's not one of the GPS sentences I list on the Capabilities Chart, so
can't help you there (and I thought it'd be an easy thing to answer!)
I know Xastir doesn't currently decode it, but that could be changed in an
instant. Xastir does know how to send those sentences to a GPS though.

Theoretically that should work with most of the APRS client apps, at least
the ones that provide a server port. I think several of them do.

No, PHG must be the first 7 bytes of the position comment field. That is
the APRS format. Some programs may accept it elsewhere in The packet, but
that is just sloppy programming. de Wb4APR
